SPANISH - ENGLISH DICTIONARY

paja
paja-1
  straw ; chaff ; hay.
The situation was probably similar in Britain, except that very little straw pulp was used, and a considerable amount of esparto.
Large research libraries play an active role, if often unrecognized, in shaping the direction of scholarship through their decisions about what is important to preserve for posterity and what is chaff to be discarded.
These are animal sculptures created from natural materials, e.g., hay, moss and peat.
alpaca de paja
straw bale
The book discusses the use of straw bales as a building material.
cartón hecho de paja
strawboard
The typical yellow-back of the mid nineteenth century was a cheap edition of fiction in small crown octavo, retailing a 2 shillings, and its case was made of glazed coloured paper on strawboard.
hombre de paja
straw man
straw figure
frontman
This has long been known to be a straw man (i.e., an obvious fallacy) to be knocked down.
The form this 'hypothesis' has come to take is easily dismissed as a straw figure and serious consideration of the relation between language diversity and thinking has largely tumbled with it.
By the time he made his shameless UN appearance, Powell had already spent almost four decades as a frontman for some of the most vicious and ugly elements in American politics and government.
ombrero de paja
straw boater
Straw boaters, scarce since the war, are now once more part of the uniform for boys at many schools in Sydney.
rellenar de paja
pad out
There were 900-920 pages of text, containing 150,000200,000 words, padded out with wide margins, and extravagant chapter divisions.
separar el grano de la paja    [Separa lo bueno de lo malo]  [Separa lo bueno de lo malo]
divide into + Adjetivo + sheep and + Adjetivo + goats
sort the + Adjetivo + sheep from the + Adjetivo + goats
separate + the wheat from the chaff
sort out + the wheat from the chaff
sift + the wheat from the chaff
An interesting outcome from this research has been that instead of dividing the collection of documents into relevant sheep and irrelevant goats, we rank every document, from 'most relevant' to 'least relevant'.
Instead of ranking the documents retrieved in probable order of relevance, the conventional search sorts the relevant sheep from the irrelevant goats and ignores the fact that there are a lot of 'maybe's' involved.
Special multimedia search engines such as used on CNN and Sony may be better at separating the wheat from the chaff.
The article is entitled 'Sorting out the wheat from the chaff: take a look at the multimedia features of seven Web-wide search services'.
The article is entitled 'Sifting the wheat from the chaff'.
sombrero de paja
straw hat
boater
The scythe, to me, conjures up a vision of warm summer days and lingering sunsets, straw hats, sackcloth and shire horses.
Monet has painted an ethereal figure, draped in a flowing white dress, wearing a boater with a long scarf fluttering behind her.
tejado de paja
thatched roof
thatch roof
The region is further characterized by centuries-old mansions and farm houses with thatched roofs.
Urban dwelling types are appearing in the rural environment; wood is replaced by brick and cement and thatch and shingle roofs are replaced by sheet iron.
paja
paja-2
  wank.
Channel 4 has postponed transmission of its 'wank week' programming in a bid to avoid further controversy.
hacerle una paja a un muerto
flog + a dead horse
beat + a dead horse
fart in + the wind
When Harries refuted the view that Africans were 'helpless cogs in the wheels of capitalist industrialization,' he was flogging a dead horse.
Despite all the written and spoken words, and the charge that to even raise the issue now is to beat a dead horse, there are, regrettably, a host of continuing problems in the area of fairness of headings.
Loving people is like farting in the wind; you don't actually accomplish anything, but you feel better.
hacerse una paja
wank
jerk + Reflexivo + off
jag off
Men that wank too hard, can experience difficulty having penetrative sex with women.
It all happened when he was jerking off in the train washroom and the ticket inspector knocked at the door.
The sex between then was awesome, a must see film, so unbelievable, just watching them go wild with lust, will make you want to jag off to the scene.
paja mental
mental masturbation
mental aberration
mental crap
Blogging, for me, is mostly brain spew, mental masturbation.
He makes his interlocutors wonder whether his violations of maxims are caused by mental aberration, rather than a conscious intent to disrupt verbal exchange.
Furthermore, we will demonstrate the consequences and the intended and unintended outcomes stemming from this tsunamic tide of mental crap.
