Sago

Sago

The sago or sagum was a military garment that the Romans took from the Greeks or the Gauls. The sago is a kind of square cloak that did not pass from the knees and was put on top of the other dresses adjusting by means of a brooch. It had as a symbol of war as the toga was a peace and in abnormal circumstances all citizens dressed the sago except those who exercised consular functions. It was an ancient type of Roman coat that was made from a rectangular piece of wool. He had an opening for the head and occasionally a hood. The top third of the coat was turned and served as additional moisture protection from the shoulders. In bad weather the coat was spread over the head. It was a thick layer of sheepskin, it seems to be always black, commonly used between warriors and shepherds. It was Julio Caro Baroja who related the coats of the shepherds with the famous "sagum" Celtiberians. We can find many similarities and differences. Baroja spoke of a garment of similar functionality and in the same area, hence establishing a relationship.
