Selenosis

Selenosis

Selenosis is produced by too much selenium intake, or by changes in the catabolism of selenocysteine through selenocysteine beta-lyase. Selenium poisoning may be produced by intakes of this ion of more than 200 ug / day. It is possible that this metabolic alteration interferes with the metabolism of sulfur, which acts as an important antioxidant, in many enzymes that prevent the production of free radicals in the body. The protein synthesis is diminished, because it interferes in the metabolism of some amino acids like the methionine, saturating the products and causing that their reactions are inhibited. The symptoms of selenosis are loss of hair and nails, skin lesions, falling teeth, and abnormalities of the central nervous system. Selenosis in most cases is concomitant with fluorosis.
