Volume

Volumen

Volume is a scalar quantity defined as the three-dimensional extension of a region of space. It is a magnitude derived from length, since it is found by multiplying the length, the width and the height. From a physical point of view, the material bodies occupy a volume by the fact of being extensive, a phenomenon that is due to Pauli's exclusion principle. Capacity and volume are equivalent but not equal terms. The capacity of a vessel is defined as the "property of a thing to contain others within certain limits". Capacity refers to the volume of empty space of something that is sufficient to contain another or other things. The unit of measurement of volume in the International System of Units is the cubic meter. The liter is used to measure the capacity. For historical reasons, there are separate units for both, however they are related by the equivalence between the liter and the cubic decimeter: 1 dm3 = 1 liter = 0.001 m3 = 1,000cm3.
