Position: ▪ Tetrapods ▪ Amphibians ▪ Amniotes ▪ Sauropsides ▪ Birds ▪ Synapsides including Mammals Amniotes are tetrapod vertebrates that possess amnios or amniotic sacs that protect the embryo or fetus. The embryo, protected by a hard-shell egg or by the maternal uterus, develops in an aqueous medium inside the amnion. Some other characteristics of amniotes are: ▪ convex occipital condyle ▪ loss of bone from the cranial roof, intertemporal ▪ orbits border the frontal. ▪ costal respiration The Amniota clade, now well supported, groups the traditional classes of reptiles, birds and mammals, and amniotes are the brother group of lissamphibians among the current tetrapods. From a phylogenetic point of view, they are composed of the synapse line leading to mammals and the sauropsid line leading to turtles, lepidosaurians and archosaurians.
