The aorist is a time and an aspect that is found in certain Indo-European languages ​​such as Sanskrit, Serbian, Bulgarian, Croatian, Bosnian, Old Czech or Greek. It does not exist any more in Latin, although the perfect of this language comes from it, without having preserved its aspectal value. It is from Indo-European that the aorist comes: it is indeed one of the three fundamental morphological themes of this language and its most archaic descendants. At the beginning, the aorist did not denote any temporal value but a so-called "zero" aspect, that is to say that the verbal report is represented without reference to its duration. It is therefore directly opposed to the imperfective and, in ancient Greek, to the static, which presents the process as a present result of a past action. The aorist, however, has come to assume an accomplished temporal value, which is found to be true in ancient Greek, where this is the case in the indicative mode only. Elsewhere, the aorist remains an aspect. In Sanskrit, it also comes to denote a process accomplished in addition to its value of finding a fact.

L’aoriste est un temps et un aspect que l'on retrouve dans certaines langues indo-européennes telles le sanskrit, le serbe, le bulgare, le croate, le bosnien, l'ancien tchèque ou le grec. Il n'existe plus tel quel en latin, bien que le parfait de cette langue en provienne, sans en avoir gardé la valeur aspectuelle. C'est de l'indo-européen que provient l'aoriste  : c'est en effet l'un des trois thèmes morphologiques fondamentaux de cette langue et de ses descendants les plus archaïques. Au départ, l'aoriste ne dénotait aucune valeur temporelle mais un aspect dit « zéro », c'est-à-dire que le procès verbal est représenté sans référence à sa durée. Il s'oppose donc directement à l'imperfectif et, en grec ancien, au statique, qui présente le procès comme un résultat présent d'une action passée. L'aoriste, cependant, en est venu à prendre une valeur temporelle accomplie, ce qui se constate bien en grec ancien, où c'est le cas au mode indicatif seulement. Ailleurs, l'aoriste reste un aspect. En sanskrit, il en vient aussi à dénoter un procès accompli en plus de sa valeur de constatation d'un fait.
