Most bacteria have a carbohydrate cell wall, peptidoglycan. Larger bacteria measure more than 2 μm and, until the beginning of the 21 st century, specialists consider the smaller ones to be 0.2 μm, but there are "ultramicrobacteria", including freshwater. The bacteria have many forms: spherical, elongated or in rods, shapes more or less spiral. The study of bacteria is bacteriology, a branch of microbiology. L’étude des bactéries est la bactériologie, une branche de la microbiologie.
