Deformation of a material
Déformation d'un matériau
The deformation of materials is a description of how the parts and objects are deformed. This is of paramount importance for shaping, design and safety. The ability of a part to deform, or to resist deformation, depends on two things: ▪ the shape of the part; ▪ the nature of the material and its elaboration. The influence of the shape of the piece is studied in the mechanics of continuous media. The influence of the material is the part that concerns this article. A material is characterized by three pairs of qualifiers: ▪ flexible / rigid: this characterizes the elasticity, the ability of the object to deform elastically, in a reversible manner; ▪ fragile / ductile: this characterizes the ductility, the ability of the object to plastically deform, irreversibly; ▪ fragile / tenacious: this characterizes the ability to withstand the propagation of a crack, to absorb the energy of a shock.
