In photography, a diaphragm is a thin, opaque mechanical device having a generally adjustable central opening. It makes it possible to limit the number of rays of the light beam which arrive on the emulsion or the sensor. The diaphragm is centered on the optical axis and separates the anterior and posterior lens groups from the lens in which it is placed. In modern objects, it is most often a device of the iris diaphragm type constituted by a series of movable metal lamellae whose position is controlled by means of a ring placed outside the lens . The diaphragm setting can be manual or coupled to the camera body. The diaphragm has three main functions: ▪ regulation of the illumination of the sensor. ▪ changing the depth of field of the image. ▪ the limitation of the optical aberrations of the objective. It therefore has a decisive role in the clarity of the images produced. It is a regulator of the sharpness of the image. En photographie, un diaphragme est un dispositif mécanique mince et opaque comportant une ouverture centrale généralement réglable. Il permet de limiter le nombre de rayons du faisceau lumineux qui arrivent sur l’émulsion ou le capteur. Le diaphragme est centré sur l’axe optique et sépare les groupes de lentilles antérieures et postérieures de l’objectif dans lequel il est placé. Dans les objectifs modernes, il s’agit le plus souvent d’un dispositif de type diaphragme à iris constitué d’une série de lamelles métalliques mobiles dont la position est contrôlée au moyen d’une bague placée à l'extérieur de l'objectif. Le réglage du diaphragme peut être manuel ou couplé avec la cellule du boîtier photographique. Le diaphragme possède trois fonctions principales : ▪ la régulation de l’illumination du capteur. ▪ la modification de la profondeur de champ de l’image. ▪ la limitation des aberrations optiques de l’objectif. Il a donc un rôle déterminant dans la netteté des images produites. C’est un régulateur de la netteté de l’image.
