The excommunication among Catholics and Orthodox and among certain Protestant groups such as the Amish or Jehovah's Witnesses is an exclusion from the Christian community and from ecclesial communion. This sanction, which only a bishop can pronounce among Catholics and Orthodox, and only for very serious motives, is the most serious of the canonical penalties. It excludes the possibility of receiving the sacraments and the exercise of certain ecclesiastical acts. Excommunication, among others, strikes schismatics and heretics. In an excommunication, however, the Church does not pronounce itself on the "eternal salvation" of a person. The excommunicated is "put into the hands of God." This is the oldest canonical punishment in Christianity. Among the first Christians, it consists of an exclusion from the Eucharistic assembly: it is the resumption of Jewish practice of exclusion from the synagogue, to which the New Testament refers in various passages.

C'est la peine canonique la plus ancienne dans le christianisme. Chez les premiers chrétiens, elle consiste en une exclusion de l'assemblée eucharistique : c'est la reprise de la pratique juive de l'exclusion de la synagogue, à laquelle le Nouveau Testament fait allusion en différents passages.
