The republican calendar, or revolutionary French calendar, was created during the French Revolution, and was used from 1792 to 1806, as well as briefly during the Paris Commune. It comes into force on the 15th Vendémiaire Year II, but begins on the 1st Vendémiaire year I, the day of proclamation of the Republic, declared the first day of the "French Age". Like the metric system, which was begun in 1790, this calendar marked the revolutionaries' desire to adopt a universal system based on the decimal system, which was no longer linked to the monarchy or to Christianity, replacing the Gregorian calendar. Besides the change of era, it includes a new cut-out of the year, and new names for the months and days. The year of the Republican calendar was divided into twelve months of thirty days each, plus five to six additional days added at the end of the year to keep it in line with the tropical year. The correspondence of the dates below, is given as an indication. Indeed, they vary slightly from year to year.

Le calendrier républicain, ou calendrier révolutionnaire français, fut créé pendant la Révolution française, et fut utilisé de 1792 à 1806, ainsi que brièvement durant la Commune de Paris. Il entre en vigueur le 15 vendémiaire an II, mais débute le 1er vendémiaire an I, jour de proclamation de la République, déclaré premier jour de l'« ère des Français ». Comme le système métrique, mis en chantier dès 1790, ce calendrier marque la volonté des révolutionnaires d'adopter un système universel s’appuyant sur le système décimal, qui ne soit plus lié à la monarchie ou au christianisme, en remplacement du calendrier grégorien. Outre le changement d'ère, il comprend un nouveau découpage de l'année, et de nouveaux noms pour les mois et les jours. L'année du calendrier républicain était découpée en douze mois de trente jours chacun, plus cinq à six jours complémentaires ajoutés en fin d'année pour qu'elle reste alignée avec l'année tropique. La correspondance des dates plus bas, est donnée à titre indicatif. En effet, elles varient légèrement d'une année à l'autre.
