In 2008, there were about 153,900 inhabitants, including more than 30,000 students. The University of Oxford is the oldest university in the Anglo-Saxon world. The Cherwell River and the Thames pass through Oxford, south of the city center. For about 16 km in the vicinity of Oxford, the Thames is called the Isis. The buildings of Oxford are an example of all periods of the architecture of England, since the arrival of the Saxons. Oxford is known as the "city of dreaming spires", a term invented by the poet Matthew Arnold in reference to the harmonious architecture of the buildings of the University of Oxford. Oxford has a varied economic base, including car building, education, publishing and many computer and scholarly enterprises.
