Pomerium

In ancient Rome, the pomerium is the sacred limit that separates the city from its territory and more especially that of the Roman city. The notion of pomerium applies only to Rome, to the ancient cities of Lazio and to the Roman colonies ritually founded. It forms a boundary at once juridical and religious: the limit of the authority of the tribunes of the plebs and of the military power; prohibition for the army to cross it; holding centuriate comics outside the pomerium; excluding burials and certain places of worship inside the pomerium. The pomerium expanded several times under the Republic and the Empire. However, the number and size of these extensions are poorly known and open to discussion.
