In French grammar, a semi-auxiliary is a conjugated verb which, combined with an infinitive not complementary to this verb, forms a periphrasis. For example, in I will eat, the semi-auxiliary is going, conjugated form of the verb to go. The verbs to go and to make as well as the modal verbs can, in particular, be used as semi-auxiliaries. The semi-auxiliary is above all a verb which, in such a construction, loses part of its meaning: in I go to eat, in the sense of "I will soon eat", the verb to go has lost the seme of displacement. It is no longer a question of moving to eat, but of eating in the near future. Even if "I am going to eat" can be understood in a sense of displacement, we will raise what is now an ambiguity by saying "I am going to eat" or, better still, "I am going to eat". On the other hand, the semi-auxiliary, unlike the auxiliary, has not lost its entire meaning.

En grammaire française, un semi-auxiliaire est un verbe conjugué qui, combiné avec un infinitif non complément de ce verbe, forme une périphrase. Par exemple, dans je vais manger, le semi-auxiliaire est vais, forme conjuguée du verbe aller. Les verbes aller et faire ainsi que les verbes modaux peuvent, notamment, être utilisés en tant que semi-auxiliaires. Le semi-auxiliaire est avant tout un verbe qui, dans une telle construction, perd une partie de son sens : dans je vais manger, au sens de « je vais bientôt manger », le verbe aller a perdu le sème du déplacement. Il ne s’agit plus de se déplacer pour aller manger, mais de manger dans un futur proche. Même si « je vais manger » peut à la limite être compris dans un sens de déplacement, on lèvera ce qui est aujourd’hui une ambiguïté en disant « je vais pour manger » ou, bien mieux, « je vais aller manger ». D’un autre côté, le semi-auxiliaire, à la différence de l’auxiliaire, n’a pas perdu la totalité de son sens.
