Soleret

The soleret is a piece of armor protecting the foot. This protection, originally made of mesh, was added in the thirteenth century to pieces of iron. These were then fastened by means of straps; but from the end of the fourteenth century onwards, progress in the manufacture of armor made it possible to manufacture solerets entirely of iron pieces articulated together, a real iron shoe with the aspect of carapace. Solerets on a Gothic armor, showing the foals curved downwards. At the beginning of the fifteenth century, the soleret was spread with foal, comprising, beyond the foot, a long iron point bending downwards. Legend attributes it to a deformity of the foot of Fulk IV, earl of Anjou, at the beginning of the eleventh century, or that of Henry II of England, in the twelfth century. In fact, this shape is inspired by the civil shoe called pigace or pigache, very fashionable in the fourteenth century but known since antiquity.
