The tartan is a woolen fabric with plaids of colors, typical of the Celtic peoples. It is a pattern of horizontal and vertical lines intersecting, of multiple colors. Tartans were originally reserved for fabrics, but are now used on many other materials. The Scottish kilts are thus almost always made in a fabric with a tartan pattern. A tartan consists of alternate strips of yarns dyed in the mass, both for weft and for warp. The weft is woven in single twill, the chain passing two yarns on top and two underneath, advancing one yarn each pass. The pattern consists of alternating strips of colored woolen yarn woven at an angle. This forms diagonal hatching at the interlacing sites and creates new colors from the mixture of the two original colors. The resultant color blocks are repeated vertically and horizontally, forming a pattern of squares and distinctive lines, the sett. Tartans are associated with clans, families since the nineteenth century. The costume was forbidden on 1 August 1747.

Le tartan est une étoffe de laine à carreaux de couleurs, typique des peuples celtes. Il s'agit d'un motif de lignes horizontales et verticales entrecroisées, de multiples couleurs. Les tartans étaient à l'origine réservés aux tissus, mais sont maintenant utilisés sur de nombreux autres matériaux. Les kilts écossais sont ainsi quasiment toujours réalisés dans un tissu à motif de tartan. Un tartan est constitué de bandes alternées de fils teints dans la masse, aussi bien pour la trame que pour la chaîne. La trame est tissée en sergé simple, la chaîne passant deux fils dessus et deux dessous, en progressant d'un fil à chaque passage. Le motif est constitué de bandes alternées de fils de laine colorés tissés à angle. Ceci forme des hachures diagonales aux sites d'entrecroisement et crée de nouvelles couleurs à partir du mélange des deux teintes d'origine. Les blocs de couleur qui en résultent se répètent verticalement et horizontalement, formant un motif de carrés et de lignes distinctif, le sett. Les tartans sont associés aux clans, aux familles depuis le XIXe siècle. Le port du costume fut interdit le 1er août 1747.
