१. एक ऋषि का नाम जिनके पिता
मित्रावरुण थे ।
विशेष—ऋग्वेद में लिखा है कि मित्रावरुण ने उर्वशी को देखकर
कामपीड़ित हो वीर्यपात किया जिससे अगस्त्य उत्पन्न हुए ।
सायणाचायं ने अपने भाष्य में लिखा है कि इनकी उत्पत्ति एक
घड़े में हुई । इसी से इन्हें मैत्रावरुणि, और्वशेय, कुंभज घटोद्-
भव और कुंभसंभव कहते हैं । पुराणों में इनके अगस्त्य नाम
पड़ने की कथा यह लिखी है कि इन्होंने बढ़ते हुए विंध्य पर्वत
को लिटा दिया । अतः इनका एक नाम विंध्यकूट भी है । पुराणों के अनुसार इन्होंने समुद्र को चुल्लू में भरकर पी लिया था
जिससे ये समुद्रचुलुक और पीताब्धि भी कहलाते है । कही कहीं
पुराणों में इन्हे पुलस्य का पुत्र भी लिखा है । ऋग्वेद में इनकी
अनेक ऋचाएँ है ।
२. एक तारे या नक्षत्र का नाम ।
विशेष—यह भादों में सिंह के सूर्य के १७ अंश पर उदय होता है । इसका रंग कुछ पीलापन लिए हुए सफेद होता है । इसका
उदय दक्षिण की ओर होता है इससे बहुत उत्तर के निवासियों
को यह नहीं दिखाई देता । आकाश के स्थिर तारों में लुब्धक
को छोड़कर दूसरा कोई तारा इसकी तरह नहीं चमचमाता ।
यह लुब्धक से ३५° दक्षिण है ।
