१. एक वार्षिक पौधा जिसके
फल की तरकारी बनाई जाती है । भंटा । उ०—गुरू शब्द
का बैंगन करिले तब बनिहै कुँजड़ाई ।—कबीर० श०,
भा० ३, पृ० ४८ ।
विशेष—यह भटकटैया की जाति का है और अबतक कहों कहीं
जंगलों में आपसे आप उगा हुआ मिलता है जिसे 'बनभंटा'
कहते हैं । जंगली रूप में इसके फल छोटे और कड़ुवे होते है । ग्राम्य रूप में इसकी दो मुख्य जातियाँ है; एक वह जिसके
पत्तों पर काँटे होते हैं; दूसरी वह जिसके पत्तों पर काँटे नहीं
होते । इसके अतिरिक्त फल के आकार, छोटाई, बड़ाई और
रंग के भेद से अनेक जातियाँ हैं । गोल फलवाले बैंगन को
मारुवा मानिक कहते हैं और लबोतरे फलवाले को बथिया ।
यद्यपि इसके फल प्रायः ललाई लिए गहरे नीले रंग के होते हैं,
तथापि हरे और सफेद रंगके फल भी एक ही पेड़ में लगते
हैं । इसकी एक छोटी जाति भी होती है । इस पौधे की खेती
केवल मैदानों में होती है । पर्वतों की अधिक ऊँचाई पर
यह नहीं होता । इसके बीज पहले पनीरी में बोए जाते हैं;
जब पोधा कुछ बड़ा होता है, तब क्यारियों में हाथ हाथ भर की दूरी पर रोपे जाते हैं । इसके बीज की पनीरी साल में
तीन बार बोई जाती है; एक कार्तिक में दूसरी माघ में और
तीसरी जेठ अषाढ़ में । वैद्यक में यह कटु, मधुर और रुचिकारक
तथा पित्तनाशक, व्रणकारक, पुष्टिजनक, भारी और हृदय
को हितकारक माना गया है ।
