रामायण के अनुसार एक राजा का
नाम । यह कैकय देश के राजा सत्यकेतु का पुत्र था ।
विशेष— तुलसीकृत रामायण में इसकी कथा इस प्रकार दी है—
अपने पिता द्वारा राज प्राप्त करने के बाद एक दिन प्रताप-
भानु शिकार खेलने गया । इसे जंगल में एक सुअर देख
पड़ा, इसने घोड़े को उसके पीछे डाल दिया । घने जंगल में
जाकर सूअर कहीं छिप गया और राजा जंगल में भटक
गया । उस जंगल में उसे एक तपस्वी का आश्रम मिला ।
वह तपस्वी राजा का एक शत्रु था जिसका राज्य इसने
जीत लिया था । राजा प्यासा था और उसने तपस्वी को
पहचाना न था । उससे उसने पानी माँगा । तपस्वी ने
एक तालाब बतला दिया । राजा ने वहाँ जाकर जल पीकर
अपना श्रम मिटाया । रात हो रही थी, इससे तपस्वी राजा
को अपने आश्रम में ले गया । रात के समय दोनों में बातचीत
हुई । तपस्वी ने कपट से राजा को अपनी मीठी मीठी बातों से
वशीभूत कर लिया । भानुप्रताप उसकी बातें सुनकर उसपर
विश्वास करके रात को वहीं आश्रम में सो रहा । तपस्वी ने
अपने मित्र कालकेतु राक्षस को बुलाया । इसी ने सूकर बनकर राजा को भुलाया था । वह राजा को क्षणभर में उठाकर
उसकी राजधानी में पहुँचा आया और उसके घोड़े को
घुड़शाला में बाँध आया । साथ ही उस राजा के पुरोहित
को भी उठाकर एक पर्वत की गुफा में बंद कर आया और
पुरोहित का रूप धरकर उसके स्थान पर लेट रहा ।
सबेरे जब राजा जागा तो उसे मुनि पर विशेष श्रद्धा हुई ।
पुरोहित को बुलाकर राजा ने तीसरे दिन भोजन बनाने की
आज्ञा दी और ब्राह्मणों को भोजन का निमंत्रण दिया ।
कपटी पुरोहित ने अनेक मांसों के साथ मनुष्य (ब्राह्मण) का
मांस भी पकाया । जब ब्राह्मण लोग भोजन करने उठे राजा
परोसने लगा तब इसी बीच में आकाशवाणी हुई कि तुम
लोग यह अन्न मत खाओ, इसमें मनुष्य का मांस है । ब्राह्मण
लोग आकाशवाणी सुनकर उठ गए और राजा को शाप
दिया कि तुम परिवार सहित राक्षस हो । कहते हैं, वही
राजा भानुप्रताप मरने पर रावण हुआ । (देखिए तुलसीकृत
