विशेष—प्राचीन काल में प्रायः सब सभ्य देशों में इस विद्या का
प्रचार था । भारत के अतिरिक्त फारस, मिस्त्र, यूनान, रोम
आदि के प्राचीन इतिहासों और चित्रों आदि के देखने से
उन सब देशों में इस विद्या के प्रचार का पता लगता है ।
भारतवर्ष में तो इस विद्या के बड़े बड़े ग्रंथ थे जिन्हें
क्षत्रियकुमार अभ्यासपूर्वक पढ़ते थे । मधुसूदन सरस्वती ने
अपने प्रस्थानभेद नामक ग्रंथ में धनुवेंद को यजुर्वेद का
उपवेद लिखा है । आजकल इस विद्या का वर्णन कुछ ग्रंथों
में थोड़ा बहुत मिलता है । जैसे, शुक्रनीति, कामंदकीनीत,
अग्निपुराण, वीरचिंतामाणि, वृद्धशार्ङ्गधर, युद्धजयार्णव,
युक्तिकल्पतरु, नीतिमयूख, इत्यादि । धनुर्वेदसांहिता नामक
एक अलग पुस्तक भी मिलती है पर उसकी प्राचीनता और
प्रामाणिकता में संदेह है ।
अग्निपूराण में ब्रह्मा और महेश्वर इस वेद के आदि प्रकटकर्ता
कहे गए हैं । पर मधुसूदन सरस्वती लिखते हैं कि विश्वामित्र
ने जिस धनुर्वेद का प्रकाश किया था, यजुर्वेद का उपवेद वही है । उन्होंने अपने प्रस्थानभेद में विश्वामित्रकृत इस उपवेद
का कुछ संक्षिस ब्योरा भी दिथा है । उसमें चार पाद हैं—
दीक्षापाद, संग्रहपाद, सिद्धिपाद और प्रयोगपाद । प्रथम
दीक्षापाद में धनुर्लक्षण (धनुस् के अंतर्गत सब हथियार लिए
गए हैं) और अधिकारियों का निरूपण है । आयुद चार
प्रकार के कहे गए हैं—मुक्त, अनुक्त, मुक्तामुक्त, और यंत्रमुक्त ।
मुक्त आयुध, जसे चक्र । अमुक्त आयुध, जैसे, खङ्ग । मुक्ता-
मुक्त, जैसे, भाला, बरछा । मुक्त को और अमुक्त को
शस्त्र कहते हैं । अधिकारी का लक्षण कहकर फिर दीक्षा,
अभिषेक, शकुन आदि का वर्णन है । संग्रहपाद में आचार्य का
लक्षण तथा अस्त्रश स्त्रादि के संग्रह का वर्णन है । तृतीयपाद
में संप्रदाय सिद्ध विशेष विशेष शस्त्रों के अभ्यास, मंत्र, देवाता
और सिद्धि आदि विषय हैं । प्रयोग नामक चतुर्थ पाद में
देवाचंन, सिद्धि, अस्त्रशस्त्रादि के प्रयोगों का निरूपण है ।
वैशंपायन के अनुसार शाङ्गं धनुस् में तीन जगह झुकाव होता है
पर वैणव अर्यात् बाँस के धनुस् का झुकाव बराबर क्रम से
होता है । शाङ्ग धनुस् ६ । । हाथ का होता है और अश्वा-
रोहियों तथा गजारोहियों के काम का होता है । रथी और
पैदल के लिये बाँस का ही धनुस् ठीक है । अग्निपुराण के
अनुसार चार हाथ का धनुस् उत्तम, साढ़े तीन हाथ का
मध्यम और तीन हाथ का अधम माना गया है । जिस धनुष के बाँस में नौ गोँठे हों उसे कोदंड कहना चाहिए । प्राचीन
काल में दो डोरियों की गुलेल भी होती थी जिसे उपलक्षेपक
कहते थे । डोरी पाट की और कनिष्ठा उँगली के बराबर
मोटी होनी चाहिए । बाँस छीलकर भी डोरी बनाई
जाती है । हिरन या भैंसे की ताँत की डोरी भी बहुत
मजबूत बन सकती है ।—(वृद्धशाङ्गधर) ।
बाण दो हाथ से अधिक लंबा और छोटी उँगली से अधिक मोटा
न होना चाहिए । शर तीन प्रकार के कहे गए हैं—जिसका
अगला भाग मोटा हो वह स्त्रीजातीय हैं, जिसका पिछला
भाग मोटा हो वह पुरुषजातीय और जो सर्वत्र बराबार हो
वह नपुंसक जातीय कहलाता है । स्त्रीजातीय शर बहुत दूर
तक जाता है । पुरुषजातीय भिदता खूब है और नपुंसक
जातीय निशाना साधने के लिये अच्छा होता है । बाण के
फल अनेक प्रकार के होते हैं । जैसे, आरामुख, क्षुरप्र, गोपुच्छ,
अर्धचंद्र, सूचीमुख, भल्ल, वत्सदंत, द्विभल्ल, काणिक,
काकतुंड, इत्यादि । तीर में गति सीधी रखने के लिये पीछे
पखों का लगाना भी आवश्यक बताया गया है । जो बाण
सारा लोहे का होता है उसे नाराच कहते हैं ।
उक्त ग्रंथ में लक्ष्यभेद, शराकर्षण आदि के संबध में बहुत से
नियम बताए गए है । रामायण, महाभारत, आदि में शब्द-
भेदी बाण मारने तक का उल्लेख है । अंतिम हिंदू सम्राट्
महाराज पृ्थ्वीराज के संबंध में भी प्रसिद्ध है कि वे शब्दभेदी
बाण मारते थे ।
