प्रसिद्ध ज्योतिषी गेलिलियो ने भी स्वतंत्र रूप से एक प्रकार की दूरबीन का आविष्कार किया था । तब से दूरबीन बनाने के काम में बराबर उन्नति होती आई है । आजकल दूरबीन
का उपयोग सैर के लिये, दूर के अच्छे अच्छे दृश्य देखने,
युद्धक्षेत्र में शत्रुओं की सेना आदि का पता लगाने और
आकाशीय तारों आदि को देखने में होता है । आकाश के तारे
आदि देखने के लिये आजकल की वेधशालाओं में जो दूरबीनें
होती हैं वे बहुत ही भारी होता हैं । उनके नलों की लंबाई
सात फुट तक और व्यास तीन फुट तक होता है ।
२. छोटी दूरबीन के आकार का लड़कों का एक खिलौना जिसमें
एक ओर शीशा लगा रहता है और जिसमें आँख लगाकर
देखने से रंग बिरंगे फूल आदि दिखाई देते हैं ।
