मुनि के आश्रम के पास जा निकले । उस समय कण्व मुनि की पाली हुई लड़की शकुंतला वहां थी । उसने राजा का
उचित सत्कार किया । राज उसके रूप पर मुग्घ हो गए ।
पूछने पर राजा को मालूम हुआ कि शकुंतला एक अप्सरा के
गर्भ से उत्पन्न विश्वामित्र ऋषि की कन्या है । जब राजा ने
विवाह का प्रस्ताव किया तब शकुंतला ने कहा 'यदि गांधर्व
विवाह में कुछ दोष न हौ और आप मेरे ही पुत्र को युवराज
बनाएँ तो मैं सम्मत हूँ' । राजा विवाह करके शकुंतला को
कण्व ऋषि के आश्रम पर छोड़ अपनी राजधानी में चले
गए । कुछ दिन बीतने पर शकुंतला को एक पुत्र हुआ जिसका
नाम आश्रम के ऋषियों ने सर्वदमन रखा । कण्व ऋषि ने
शकुंतला को पुत्र के साथ राजा के पास भेजा । शकुंतला ने
राजा के पास जाकर कहा 'हे राजन ! यह आपका पुत्र
मेरे गर्भ से उत्पन्न हुआ है और आपका औरस पुत्र है, इसे
युवराज बनाइए' । राजा को सब बातें यद तो थीं पर लोक-
निंदा के भय से उन्होंने उन्हें छिपाने की चेष्टा की और
