भाँग की जाति का एक पौधा ।
विशेष—यह देखने में भाँग से भिन्न नहीं होता, पर भाँग की
तरह इसमें फूल नहीं लगते । नैपाल की तराई, बंगाल आदि
में यह भाँग के साथ आपसे आप उगता है; पर कहीं कहीं
इसकी खेती भी होती है । इसमें बाहर फूल नहीं लगते, पर
बीज पड़ते हैं । वनस्पति, शास्त्रविदों का मत है कि भाँग के
पौधे के तीन भेद होते है—स्त्री, पुरुष और उभयलिंगी । इसकी
खेती करनेवालों का यह भी अनुभव है कि यदि गाँजे के पौधे के पास या खेत में भाँग के पौधे हो, तो गाँजा अच्छा नहीं
होता । इसलिये गाँजे के खेत से किसान प्रायः भाँग के पौधे
उखाड़कर फेंक देते हैं । गाँजे के पौधे से एक प्रकार का लासा
भी निकलता है । यद्यपि नीचे के देशों में यह यह लासा उतना
नहीं निकलता तथापि हिमालय पर यह बहुतायत से निकलता
है और इसी से चरस बनती है । हिंदुस्तान में गाँजा खाया
नहीं जाता; लोग इसमें तमाकू मिलाकर इसे चिलम पर पीते
हैं; पर अँगरेजी दवाओं में इसका सत्त काम में लाया जाता
हैं । गाँजे की कई जातियाँ है—बालूचर, पहाड़ी, चपटा, गोली,
भँगेरा इत्यादि । बालूचर के तैयार होने पर उसे काटकर और
पूला बनाकर पैरों से रौंदते हैं । इस प्रकार तले ऊपर रखकर
वैद्यक में गाँजे को कडुवा, कसैला, तीता और उष्ण लिखा है
और उसे कफनाशकत, ग्राही, पाचक और अग्निवर्धक माना है । यह नशीला और पित्तोत्पादक होता है । इसके रेशे
मजबूत होते हैं और सन की तरह सुतली बनाने के काम में
आते हैं । नैपाल आदि पहाड़ी देशों में इन रेशों से एक प्रकार
का मोटा कपड़ा भी बुनते हैं जिसे भँगरा कहते हैं ।
