हेत्वाभास संज्ञा पुं० [सं०] न्याय में किसी बात को सिद्ध करने के लिये उपस्थित किया हुआ वह कारण जो कारण सा प्रतीत होता हुआ भी ठीक कारण न हो । असत् हेतु । उ०— जब जग हेत्वाभास मात्र है, तब फिर मेरा सपना । क्यों न रहे मेरे जीवन में होकर मेरा अपना ।—अपलक, पृ० ३९ । विशेष—सव्यभिचार, विरुद्ध, प्रकरणसम, साध्यसम और काला- तीत भेद से हेत्वाभास पाँच प्रकार का कहा गया है—(१) जो हेतु और दूसरी बात भी उसी प्रकार सिद्ध करे अर्थात् ऐकांतिक न हो, वह 'सव्यभिचार' कहलाता है । जैसे,—शब्द नित्य है क्योंकि वह अमूर्त है; जैसे,—परमाणु । यहाँ अमूर्त होना जो भेद दिया गया है, वह बुद्धि का उदाहरण लेने से शब्द को अनित्य भी सिद्ध करता है । (२) जो हेतु प्रतिज्ञा के ही विरुद्ध पड़े वह 'विरुद्ध' कहलाता है । जैसे,— घट उत्पत्ति धर्मवाला है, क्योंकि वह नित्य है । (३) जिस हेतु में जिज्ञास्य विषय (प्रश्न) ज्यों का त्यों बना रहता है, वह 'प्रकरणसम' कहलाता है । जैसे,—शब्द अनित्य है; उसमें नित्यता नहीं है । (४) जिस हेतु को साध्य के समान ही सिद्ध करने की आवश्यकता हो, उसे 'साध्यसम' कहते हैं । जैसे,—छाया द्रव्य है क्योंकि उसमें गति है । यहाँ छाया में स्वतः गति है, इसे साबित करने की आवश्यकता है । (५) यदि हेतु ऐसा दिया जाय जो कालक्रम के विचार से साध्य पर न घटे, तो वह 'कालातीत' कहलाता है । जैसे,—शब्द नित्य है, क्योंकि उसकी अभिव्यक्ति संयोग से होती है । जैसे,— घट के रूप की । यहाँ घट का रूप दीपक के संयोग के पहले भी था, पर ढोल का शब्द लकड़ी के संयोग के पहले नहीं था ।
