कई जातियाँ होती हैं । कुछ के पौधे तो साल ही दो साल रहते
हैं और कुछ की पेड़ी बहुत दिनों तक रहती है, जिसमें समय
समय पर नई नई टहनियाँ और पत्तियाँ निकला करती हैं ।
पिछले प्रकार के पौधों की हीँग घटिया होती है और 'हीँगड़ा'
कहलाती है । हींग के पौधे अफगानिस्तान, फारस के पूर्वी हिस्से
(खुरासान, यज्द) तथा तुर्किस्तान के दक्षिणी भाग में बहुतायत
से होते हैं । पर भारत में जो हीँग आती है, वह कंधारी हीँग
(अफगानिस्तान की) है । हीँग का व्यवहार बघार के अतिरिक्त
औषध में भी होता है । यह शूलनाशक, वायुनाशक, कफ
निकालनेवाली, कुछ रेचक और उत्तेजक होती है । पेट के दर्द,
वायगोला और हिस्टीरिया (मूर्छा रोग) में यह बहुत उपकारी
होती है । आयुर्वेद में इसके योग से कई पाचक चूर्ण और
गोलियाँ बनती हैं । हीँग में व्यापारी अनेक प्रकार की मिलावट
करते हैं । शुद्ध खालिस हीँग 'तलाव हीँग' कहलाती है ।
