ज्ञानेंद्रिय वे हैं जिनसे केवल विषयों के गुणों का अनुभव होता है । ये पाँच है चक्षु (जिससे रूप का ज्ञान होता है), श्रोत्र
(जिससे शब्द का ज्ञान होता है ।), नासिका (जिससे गंध का
ज्ञान होता है), रसना (जिससे स्वाद का ज्ञान होता है) और
त्वचा (जिससे स्पर्श द्वारा कड़े और नरम आदि का ज्ञान होता
है) । इसी प्रकार कर्मेंद्रियाँ भी, जिनके द्वारा विविध कर्म किए
जाते हैं, पाँच हैं—वाणी (बोलने के लिये), हाथ (पकड़ने के लिये)
पैर (चलने के लिये), गुदा (मलत्याग करने के लिये), उपस्थ
(मूत्रत्याग करने के लिये) । इसके अतिरिक्त उभयात्मक अंतरेंद्रिय
'मन' भी माना गया है जिसके मन, बुद्धि, अहंकार और .चित
चार विभाग करके वेदांतियों ने कुल १४ इंद्रियाँ मानी हैं ।
इनके पृथक् पृथक् देवता कल्पित किए हैं, जैसे, कान के देवता
दिशा, त्वचा के वायु, चक्षु के सूर्य, जिह्वा के प्रचेता, नासिका के अश्विनीकुमार, वाणी के अग्नि, पैर के विष्णु, हाथ के
इंद्र, गुदा के मित्र, उपस्थ के प्रजापति, मन के चंद्रमा, बुद्धि के
ब्रह्मा, चित्त के अच्युत, अहंकार के शंकर । न्याय के मत से
पृथ्वी का अनुभव घ्राण से, जल का जिह्वा से, तेज का चक्षु
से, वायु का त्वचा से और आकाश का कान से होता है ।
