Saffron Is cleaned. जोँक संज्ञा स्त्री० [सं० जलौक्स्] १. पानी में रहनेवाले एक प्रसिद्ध कीडा़ जो बिलकुल थैली के आकार का होता है और जीवों के शरीर में चिपककर उनका रक्त चूसता है । विशेष— इसकी छोटी बडी अनेक जातियाँ है जिनमें से अधिकांश तालाबों और छोटी नदियों आदि में, कुछ तर घासों में और बहुत थोडी जातियाँ समुद्र में होती है । साधराण जोँक डेढ़ दो इंच लंबी होती है पर किसी किसी जाति की समुद्री जोंक ढाई फुट तक लंबी होती है । साधारणत: जोंक का शरीर कुछ चिपटा और कालापन मिले हरे रंग का या भूरा होता है जिनपर या तो धारियाँ या बुँदकियाँ होती है । आँखें इसे बहुत सी होती है, पर काटने और लहू चूसने की शक्ति केवल आगे, मुँह की ओर ही होती है । आकार के विचार से साधारण जोंक तीन प्रकार की मानी जोती है — कागजी, मझोली और भैसिंया । सुश्रुत ने बारह प्रकार की जोंके गिनाई है—कृष्णा, अलपर्द्दा, इंद्रायुधा, गोचंदना, कर्बुरा और सामुद्रिक ये छह प्रकार की जोंके जहरीली और कपिला, पिंगला, शँकुमुखी, मूषिका, पुँडरीक- मुखी और सावरिका ये छह प्रकार की जोंके बिना जहर की बतलाई गई हैं । जोंक शरीर के किसी स्थान में चिपककर खून चूसने लगती है और पेट में खून भर जाने के कारण खूब फूल उठती है । शरीर के किसी अंग में फोडा फुंसी या गिलटी आदि हो जाने पर वहाँ का दूषित रक्त निकाल देने के लिये लोग इसे चिपका देते हैं और जब वह खूब खून पी लेती है तब उसे उँगलियों से खूब कसकर दुह लेते है जिससे सारा खून उसकी गुदा के मार्ग से निकल जाता है । भारत में बहुत प्राचीन काल से इस कार्य के लिये इसका उपयोग होता आया है । कभी कभी पशुओं के जल पीने के समय जल के साथ जोंक भी उनके पेट में चली जाती है । पर्या०—रक्तपा । जलूका । जलोरगी । तीक्ष्णा । बमनी । वेधनी । जलसर्पिणी । जलसूची । जलाटनी । जलाका । पटालुका । वेणीवेधनी । जलात्पिका । क्रि० प्र०—लगाना ।—लगवाना । २. वह मनुष्य जो अपना काम निकालने के लिये बेतरह पीछे पड़ जाय । वह जो बिना अपने काम निकाले पिंड न छोडे़ । ३. सेवार का बनाया हुआ एक प्रकार का छनना जिससे चीनी साफ की जाती है ।
