५—६ हाथ ऊँचा जाता है । डठल में सात सात आठ आठ अंगुल
पर गाँठें होती हैं जिनसे हाथ डेढ़ हाथ लंबे तलवार के आकार के पत्ते दोनों ओर निकलते हैं । इसके सिरे पर फूल के जीरे
और सफेद दानों के गुच्छे लगते हैं । ये दाने छोटे छोटे होते
हैं और गेहूँ की तरह खाने के काम में आते हैं । ज्वार कई
प्रकार की होती है जिनके पौधों में कोई विशेष भेद नहीं
दिखाई पड़ता । ज्वार की फसल दो प्रकार की होती है, एक
रबी, दूसरी खरीफ । मक्का भी इसी का एक भेद है । इसी से
कहीं कहीं मक्का भी ज्वार ही कहलता है । ज्वार को जोन्हरी,
जुंडी आदि भी कहते हैं । इसके डंठल और पौधे को चारे के काम में लाते हैं और चरी कहते हैं । इस अन्न के उत्पत्तिस्थान के संबंध में मतभेद है । कोई कोई इसे अरब आदि
पश्चिमी देशों से आया हुआ मानते हैं और 'ज्वार' शब्द को
अरबी 'दूरा' से बना हुआ मानते हैं, पर यह मत ठीक नहीं
जान पड़ता । ज्वार की खेती भारत में बहुत प्राचीन काल से
होती आई है । पर यह चारे के लिये बोई जाती थी, अन्न के लिये नहीं ।
