का आकर्षण है । चंद्रमा के आकर्षण में दूरत्व के वर्ग के
हिसाब से कमी होंती है । पृथ्वी जल के उस भाग के अणु
जो चंद्रमा से निकट होगा, उस भाग के अणुओं की अपेक्षा
जो दूर होगा, अधिक आकर्षित होंगे । चंद्रमा की अपेक्षा
पृथ्वी से सूर्य की दूरी बहुत अधिक है; पर उसका पिंड चंद्रमा
से बहुत ही बडा़ है । अतः सुर्य की ज्वार उत्पन्न करनेवाली
शक्ति चंद्रमा से बहुत कम नहीं है ४/९ के लगभग है । सूर्य की
यह शक्ति कभी कभी चंद्रमा की शक्ति के प्रतिकूल होती है;
पर अमावस्या और पूर्णिमा के दिन दोनों की शक्तियाँ
परस्पर अनुकूल कार्य करती हैं; अर्थात् जिस अंश में एक
ज्वारा उत्पन्न करेगी, उसी अंश में दूसरी भी ज्वार उत्पन्न
करेगी । इसी प्रकार जिस अंश में एक भाटा उत्पन्न ।
करैगी दूसरी भी उसी में भाटा उत्पन्न करेगी । यही
कारण है कि अमावस्या और पूर्णिमा को और दिनों की
अपेक्षा ज्वार अधिक ऊँची उठती है । सप्तमी और अष्टमी के
दिन चंद्रमा और सूर्य की आकर्षण शक्तियाँ प्रतिकूल रूप से
कार्य करती हैं, अतः इन दोनों तिथियों को ज्वार सबसे कम
उठती है ।
