एक पेड़ ।
विशेष—इसकी पत्तियाँ एक बित्ता लंबी और आध अंगुल से
एक अंगुल तक चौड़ी और नुकीली होती हैं । ये कड़ी, चिकनी
और हरगे हरे रंग की होती है तथा दो दो पत्तियाँ एक साथ
आमने सामने निकलती हैं । डाल में से सफेद दूध निकलता है ।
फूलों के विचार से यह दो प्रकार का है, सफेद फुल का कनेर
और लाल फूल का कनेर । दोनों प्रकार के कनेर सदा
फूलते रहते हैं और बड़े विषैले होते हैं । सफेद फूल का
कनेर अधिक विषैल माना जाता है । फुलों के झड़ जाने पर
आठ दस अंगुल लंबी पतली पतली फलियाँ लगती हैं । फलियों के पकने पर उनके भीतर से बहुत छोटे छोटे मदार की
तरह रूई में लगे निकलते हैं । कनेर घोड़े कि लिये बडा़ भयंकर
विष है; इसी लिये संस्कृत दोषों में इसके अश्वघ्न, हयमार,
तुरंगारि आदि नाम मिलते हैं । एक और पेड़ होता है जिसकी
पत्तियाँ और फल कनेर ही के ऐसे होते हैं । उसे भी कनेर
कहते है, पर उसकी पत्तियाँ पतली छोटी और अधिक
चमकीली होती हैं । फूल भी बड़ा और पीले रंग का होता
है तथा हलकी लालिमा से युक्त पीले रंग का भी होता है ।
फुलों के गिर दाने पर उसमें गोल गोल फल लगते है जिनके
भीतर गोल गोल चिपटे बीज निकलती हैं ।
वेद्यक में दो प्रकार के और कनेर लिखे हैं—एक गुलाबी फूल
का, दूसरा काले रंग का । गुलाबी फूलवाले कनेर का लाल
कनेर ही के अंतर्गत समझना चाहिए; पर काले रंग का कनेर
सिवाय निघंटु रत्नाकर ग्रंथ के और कहीं देखने या सुनने में
नहीं आया है । वेद्यक में कनेर गरम, कृमिनाशक तथा घाव,
कोढ़ और फोड़े फुंसी आदि को दुर करनेवाला माना
गया है ।
