में जमीन के अंदर बिल खोदकर झुंड में रहता है और रात के समय आस पास के खेतों, विशेषतः ऊख के खेतों को बहुत
हाँनि पहुँ चाता है । यह बहुत अधिक डरपोक और अत्यंत
कोमल होता है और जरा से आघात से मर जाता है । यह
छलाँगें मारते हुए बहुत तेज दौड़ता है । इसके दाँत बड़े तेज
होते हैं । खरही छह मास के होने पर गर्भवती हो जाती है
और एक मास पीछे सात आठ बच्चे देती है । दस पंद्रह दिन
पीछे वह फिर गर्भवती हो जाती है और इसी प्रकार बराबर
बच्चे दिया करती है । किसी किसी देश के खरहे जाड़े के दिनों
में सफेद हो जाते हैं । इनका मांस बहुत स्वादिष्ट होता है ।
शास्त्रों के अनुसार यह भक्ष्य है और वैद्यक में इसका मांस
ठंढा, लघु, शोथ, अतीसार पित्त और रक्त का नाशक और
मलबद्ध कारक माना गया है । इसे चौगुड़ा, लमहा और
खरगोश भी कहते हैं । इसका संस्कृत नाम 'शश' है ।
