विशेष—इसका उल्लेख पुराणों, महाभारत और बौद्ध ग्रंथों में
आया है । यह महिषमंडल नामक जनपद की राजधानी थी ।
पुराणों में इसे नर्मदा नदी के किनारे लिखा है । सहस्रार्जुन
यहीं का रहनेवाला था । महाभारत मैं माहिष्मती और त्रिपुर
का नाम साथ आया है । त्रिपुर को आजकल त्रिपुरी कहते हैं;
पर माहिष्मती का अबतक ठीक पता नहीं है । पुरातत्वविदु
कनिंधम साहव ने 'माहिषमंडल' के 'मंडल' शब्द को लेकर
'मंडला' नगर को माहिष्मती लिखा है ।
