विशेष—इसके उत्तर में भूमध्यसागर, पूर्व में स्वेज की खाड़ी और
पश्चिम में सहारा का रेगिस्तान है । दक्षिण में यह नील नदी के उद्गम तक चला गया है । नील नदी में प्रतिवर्ष बहुत बड़ी
बाढ़ आती है जिसके कारण उसके आस पास का प्रदेश
बहुत अधिक उपजाऊ है । इसके अंतर्गत चौदह प्रांत हैं । इसकी
राजनगरी वा राजधानी काहिरा है और इसका सबसे बड़ा
बंदरगाह अस्कंदरिया है । इधर बहुत दिनों से यह देश तुर्की के अधीन था और वहीं का राजप्रतिनिधि इसका शासन करता
था; पर अब इसे अंगरेजों ने अपने संरक्षण में ले लिया ।
इस देश के विशुद्ध प्राचीन निवासी अब यहाँ नहीं रह गए हैं
और उनकी वर्णसंकर संतान बची हैं, जिसका धर्म प्रायः
इस्लाम और भाषा अरबी से उत्पन्न है । किसी समय में इस
देश के निवासी उन्नति और सभ्यता की चरम सीमा पर पहुँच
गए थे; और यह देश रोम, भारत, चीन आदि का समकक्ष
माना जाता था; पर अब इसका पतन हो गया है । कहते हैं
कि नूह के पुत्र मिस्तर ने अपने नाम पर एक नगर बसाया था,
जिसके नाम पर इस देश का नाम पड़ा । बड़े बड़े भवनों और
इमारतों के जितने प्राचीन खँडहर इस देश में मिलते हैं,
उतने और कहीं नहीं पाए जाते । पिरामिडों के लिये भी यह
देश अत्यंत प्रसिद्ध हे । अंग्रेजों का संरक्षण और उनकी
इजारेदारी कर्नल नासिर के नेतृत्व में समाप्त करने के बाद अब
मिस्त एक स्वतंत्र देश है ।
