१. समुद्र में रहनेवाले एक प्रकार के
कृमियों के समूहपिंड की लाल ठठरी जिसकी गुरिया बनाकर
पहनते हैं । इसकी गिनती रत्नों में की जाती है ।
विशेष—समुद्रतल में एक प्रकार के कृमि खोलड़ी की तरह का
घर बनाकर एक दूसरे से लगे हुए जमते चले जाते हैं । ये कृमि
अचर जीवों में हैं । ज्यों ज्यों इनकी वंशवृद्धि होती जाती है,
त्यों त्यों इनका समूहपिंड थूहर के पेड़ के आकार में बढ़ता
चला जाता है । सुमात्रा और जावा के आसपास प्रशांत
महासागर में समुद्र के तल में ऐसे समूहपिंड हजारों मील तक
खड़े मिलते हैं । इनकी वृद्धि बहुत जल्दी जल्दी होती है । इनके
समूह एक दूसरे के ऊपर पटते चले जाते हैं जिससे समुद्र की
सतह पर एक खासा टापू निकल आता है । ऐसे टापू प्रशांत
महासागर में बहुत से हैं जो 'प्रवालद्वीप' कहलाते हैं । मूँगे की केवल गुरिया ही नहीं बनती; छड़ी, कुरसी आदि चीजें
भी बनती हैं । आभूषण के रूप में मूँगे का व्यवहार भी मोती के समान बहुत दिनों से है । मोती और मूँगे का नाम प्रायः
साथ साथ लिया जाता है । रत्नपरीक्षा की पुस्तकों में मूँगे का
भी वर्णन रहता है । साधारणतः मूँगे का दाना जितना ही
बड़ा होता है, उतना अधिक उसका मूल्य भी होता है । कवि
लोग बहुत पुराने समय से ओठों की उपमा मूँगे से देते
आए हैं ।
