Nafa, a precursor to the North-East Frontier Agency, was an administrative department in the British Raj period and in independent India till 1972. In 1972, it became a centrally administered region called Arunachal Pradesh and then in 1987, it got full statehood. By 1974, its administrative headquarters was Shillong but after that it became Itanagar.
