जाता है वे पौधे भारतवर्ष कै हैं और अरब मिस्र तथा
अमेरिकां में भी बोए जाते हैं । भारतवर्ष हो नील का आदिस्थान हे और यहीं सबसे पहले रंग निकाला जाता था ।
८० ईसवी में सिंध के किनारे के एक नगर से नील का बाहर
भेजा जाना एक प्राचीन यूनानी लेखक्र ने लिखा है । पीछे के
बहुत से विदेशियों ने यहाँ नील के बोए जाने का उल्लेख किया है । ईसा की पद्रहवीं शताब्दी में जब यहाँ से नील योरप के
देशों में जाने लगा तब से वहाँ के निवासियों का ध्यान नील की और गया । सबसे पहले हालैंडवालों ने नील का काम शुरू

आदि कानून द्वारा नील की आमद बद करने पर विवश हुए ।
कुछ दिनो तक (सन् १६६० तक) इगलैंड में भी लोग
नील को विष कहते रहे जिससे इसका वहाँ जाना बद रहा ।
पीछे बेलजियम से नील का रंग बनानेवाले बुलाए गए जिन्होंने
नील का काम सिखाया ।
पहले पहल गुजरात और उसके आस पास के देशों में से नील
