१. एक राजा जिन्हें गिरगिट योनि में रहकर
कृत पाप का फल भोगना पड़ा था ।
विशेष—महाभारत में इनकी कथा इस प्रकार है—राजा नृग
बड़े दानी थे । उन्होंने न जाने कितने गोदान आदि किए
थे । एक बार उनकी गायों के झुंड में किसी एक ब्राह्मण की गाय आ मिली । राजा ने एक बार एक ब्राह्मण को
सहस्त्र गो दान में दी जिनमें वह ब्राह्मणावाली गाय भी
थी । ब्राह्मण ने जब अपनी गाय को पहचाना तब दोनों
ब्राह्मण राजा नृग के पास आए । राजा नृग ने जिस ब्राह्मण
को गाएँ दान में दी थीं उसे गाय बदल लेने के लिये
बहुत समझाया पर उससे एक न मानी । अंत में वह
दूसरा ब्राह्मण उदास होकर चला गया । जब राजा का
परलोकवास हुआ तब उनसे यम ने कहा कि आपका पुण्य-
फल बहुत है पर ब्राह्मण की गाय हरने का पाप भी आपको
लगा है । चाहे पाप का फल पहले भोगिए, चाहे पुण्य का ।
राजा ने पाप का ही फल पहले भोगना चाहा अतः वे सहस्त्र
वर्ष के लिये गिरागिट होकर एक कुएँ में रहने लगे । अंत में
श्रीकृष्ण के हाथों से उनका उद्धार हुआ ।
