एक
पेड़ का नाम जो बंगाल में समुद्र के किनारे बहुत होता है ।
वहाँ के लोग इसे 'पालिते मंदार' कहते हैं ।
विशेष—यह पेड़ थोड़े दिनों में बढ़कर तैयार हो जाता है और
न बहुत बड़ा और न बहुत छओटा, मध्यम आकार का होता है । इसमें पहले काँटे होते है; पर बड़े होने पर छिलका
उतरता है और स्कंध चिकना हो जाता है । किंतु डालियों में
फिर भी छोटे छोटे काँटे रह जाते हैं । ढाक की पत्तियों के
समान इसमें भी एक नाल में तीन तीन पत्तियाँ होती हैं ।
फूल लाल और सुंदर होते हैं । फूलों के झड़ जाने पर
फलियाँ लगती हैं । फूलों से लाल रंग निकलता है । छाल से
भी रंग निकाला जाता है और उसे कूटकर रस्सी भी बटी
जाती है । इसकी लकड़ी नरम और साफ होती है और धूप
में फटती या चिटकती नहीं । इसके खिलौनी आदि बनाए
जाते हैं क्योकि इसपर बार्निश अच्छई खिलती है । पान के
भीटों पर इसे छाया के लिये लोग लगाते हैं । पुराणों में
इसे पंच देवतरु में माना है । इसे 'नहसुत' भी कहते हैं ।
वैद्यक में इसका स्वाद कटु, प्रकृति उष्ण और गुण अरुचि,
कफ, कृमि और प्रमेह नाशक लिखा गया है । इसका फूल
पित्तरोग और कर्णरोग का नाशक माना जाता है ।
