गांधार, चीन, शवर आदि दस्यु जातियों के साथ पौंड्रकों का
नाम भी है । पर दुसरे स्थान पर 'पौंड्रकों' और सुपुंड्रकों में
भेद किया है । पौंड्रकों और पुंड़्रों को तो अंग, बंग, गय आदि के साथ शास्त्रधारी क्षत्रिय लिखा है जिन्होंने युधिष्ठिर के
लिये बहुत साधन इकट्ठा किया था । उनके जाने पर युधिष्ठिर के द्धारपाल ने उन्हें नहीं रोका था । पर वंग कलिंग,
मगध, ताम्रलिप्त आदि के साथ सुपुंड्रकों का द्धारपाल द्धारा
रोका जाना लिखा है जिससे वे वृषलत्वप्राप्त क्षत्रिय जान
पड़ते है । मनुस्मृति में जिन पौंड्रकों का उल्लेख है वे भी
संस्कारभ्रष्ट क्षत्रिय थे जो म्लेच्छ हो गए थे । इससे पौंड्र या
पुंड्र सुपुंड्रों से भिन्न और क्षत्रिय प्रतीत होते हैं । महाभारत
कर्णपर्व में भी कुरु, पांचाल, शाल्व, मत्स्य, नैनिष, कलिंग
मागध आदि शाश्वत धर्म जाननेवाले महात्माओं के साथ पौंड्रों
का भी उल्लेख है, आदिपर्व में बलि के पाँच पुत्रों (अंग वंग
आदि) में जिस पुंड्र का नाम है उसी के वंशज संभवतः ये
पुंड्र या पौड्र हों । ब्रह्मांड और मत्स्य पुराण के अनुसार पुंड्र
लोग प्राच्य (पुरबी भारत के) थे, पर विष्णु पुराण में
और मार्कडेय पुराण में उन्हें दाक्षिणात्य लिखा है ।
