अयोध्या के राजा इक्ष्वाकुवंशी
महाराजा दशरथ के बड़े पुत्र जो ईश्वर वा विष्णु भगवान् के
मुख्य अवतारों में माने जाते हैं और जिनकी कथा रामायण
में वर्णित है ।
विशेष—इनका जन्म कौशल्या के गर्भ से हुआ था और इन्होंने
वशिष्ठ मुनि से शिक्षा पाई थी । जब ये बालक थे, तभी
विश्वामित्र मुनि इन्हें अपने यज्ञ की रक्षा के लिये अपने सात
वन में ले गए थे, जहाँ इन्होंनें अनेक राक्षसों का वध किया था ।
जब यज्ञ समाप्त हो गया, तब ये अपने छोटे भाई लक्ष्मण और
गुरु विश्वामित्र के साथ राजा जनक के यहाँ सीता के स्वयंवर
में गए । वहाँ इन्होंनें शिवजी का धनुष तोड़कर सीता का
पाणिग्रहण किया । जब ये लौटकर अयोध्या आए, तब राजा
दशरथ इनका अभिषेक करके इन्हें राजगद्दी देना चाहते थे,
पर रानी कैकेयी के कहने से उन्होनें इन्हें चौद्ह वर्षों तक वन
में रहने के लिये भेज दिया । जब ये वन जाने लगे, तब इनकी
स्त्री सीती और इनके छोटे भाई लक्ष्मण भी इनके साथ हो
लिए । इनके वन जाने पर पीछे इनके दुखी पिता दशरथ की
मृत्यु हो गई । कैकेयी अपने पुत्र भरत को सिंहासन पर बैठाना
चाहती थी; पर भरत ने स्पष्ट कह् दिया कि यह राज्य मेरे
बड़े भाई रामचंद्र का है; और मै इसे ग्रहण नहीं कर सकता ।
पीछे भरत रामचंद्र को समझा बुझाकर लाने के लिये वन में भी
गए, पर रामचंद्र ने कह दिया कि मैं पिता की आज्ञा से चौदह
वर्षो के लिये वन में आया हुँ । और जब तक यह अवधि पूरी न
हो जायगी, तब तक मै लोटकर अयोध्या नहीं चल सकता ।
इसपर भरत इनके खड़ाऊँ ले जाकर और उसे सिंहासन पर
स्थापित करके, इनकी ओर से, इनकी अनुपस्थिति में शासन
करने लगे । वनवास काल में रामचंद्र अनेक वनों और पर्वतों पर
और ऋषियों आदि के आश्रमों पर घूमा करते थे । दंडकारण्य
में एक बार लंका का राजा रावण आकार छल से सीता को
हर ले गया । इसपर इन्होंने बहुत से वानरों आदि को साथ
लेकर लंका पर चढ़ाई की ओर युद्ध में रावण तथा उसके साथी
राक्षसों को मारकर और उसका राज्य उसके छोटे भाई विभी-
षण को देकर अपनी स्त्री सीता को अपने साथ ले आए । वनवास की अवधि पूरी हो गई थी; इलसिये ये सीधे अयोध्या चले आए
और वहाँ आकार सुख से राज्य करने लगे । इनका शासन प्रजा
के लिये इतना अधिक सुखद था कि अब तक लोग इनके राज्य
को आदर्श समझते है; और अच्छे राज्य की उपमा 'रामराज्य'
से देते हैं ।
