ही प्रसिद्ध है और न रावण की कथा है । सिंहल के दो इतिहास
पाली भाषा में लिखे मिलते हैं—महाबंसो और दीपबंसो,
जिनसे वहाँ किसी समय यक्षों की बस्ती होने का पता लगता है ।
रावण के संबंध में यह प्रसिद्ध है कि उसने लका से अपने भाई
यक्षों को निकालकर राक्षसों का राज्य स्थापित किया था । बंग
देश के विजय नामक एक राजकुमार का सिंहल विजय करना
भी इतिहासों में मिलता है । ऐतिहासिक काल में यह द्वीप
स्वर्णभूमि या स्वर्णद्वीप के नाम से प्रसिद्ध था, जहाँ दूर देशों के व्यापारी मोती और मसाले आदि के लिये आते थे । प्राचीन
अरब स्वर्ण द्वीप को 'सरनदीब' कहते थे । रत्नपरीक्षा के
ग्रंथों में सिंहल द्वीप मोती, मानिक और नीलम के लिये प्रसिद्ध
पाया जाता है । भारतवर्ष के कलिंग, ताम्रलिप्ति आदि प्राचीन
बंदरगाहों से भारतवासियों के जहाज बराबर सिंहल, सुमात्रा,
जावा आदि द्वीपों की ओर जाते थे । गुप्तवंशीय चंद्रगुप्त
(सन् ४०० ईसवी) के समय फाहियान नामक जो चीनी यात्री
भारतवर्ष में आया था, वह हिंदुओं के ही जहाज पर सिंहल
होता हुआ चीन को लौटा था । उस समय भी यह द्वीप स्वर्ण-
द्वीप या सिंहल ही कहलाता था, लंका नहीं । इधर की
कहानियों में सिंहलद्वीप पद्मिनी स्त्रियों के लिये प्रसिद्ध है । यह
प्रवाद विशेषतः गोरखपंथी साधुओं में प्रसिद्ध है जो सिंहल को
एक प्रसिद्ध पीठ मानते हैं । उनमें कथा चली आती है कि
गोरखनाथ के गुरु मत्स्येंद्र नाथ (मछंदरनाथ) सिद्ध होने के लिये
सिंहल गए, पर पद्मिनियों के जाल में फँस गए । जब गोरख-
नाथ गए तब उनका उद्धार हुआ । वास्तव में सिंहल के
निवासी बिलकुल काले और भद्दे होते हैं । वहाँ इस समय दो
जातियाँ बसती हैं—उत्तर की ओर तो तामिल जाति के लोग
और दक्षिण की ओर आदिम सिंहली निवास करते हैं ।
