पुष्यमित्र के पुत्र अग्निमित्र ने विदर्भ के राजा को परास्त करके
दक्षिण में वरदा नदी तक अपने पिता के राज्य का विस्तार
बढ़ाया । जैसा कालिदास के मालविकाग्निमित्र नाटक से
प्रकट है, अग्निमित्र ने विदिशा को अपनी राजधानी बनाया था
जो वेत्रवती और विदिशा नदी के संगम पर एक अत्यंत सुंदर
पुरी थी । इस पुरी के खँडहर भिलसा (ग्वालियर राज्य में) से
थोड़ी दूर पर दूर तक फैले हुए हैं । चक्रवर्ती सम्राट् बनने की
कामना से पुष्यामित्र ने इसी समय बड़ी धूमधाम से अश्वमेध
यज्ञ का अनुष्ठान किया । इस यज्ञ के समय महाभाष्यकार
पतंजलि जी विद्यमान थे । अश्वरक्षा का भार पुष्यामित्र के पौत्र
(अग्निमित्र के पुत्र) वसुमित्र को सौंपा गया जिसने सिंधु नदी के किनारे यवनों को परास्त किया । पुष्यमित्र के समय में वैदिक
या ब्राह्मण धर्म का फिर से उत्थान हुआ और बौद्ध धर्म दबने
लगा । बौद्ध ग्रंथों के अनुसार पुष्यमित्र ने बौद्धों पर बड़ा अत्या-
चार किया और वे राज्य छोड़कर भागने लगे । ईसा से १४८
वर्ष पहले पुष्यमित्र की मृत्यु हुई और उसका पुत्र अग्निमित्र
सिंहासन पर बैठा । उसके पीछे पुष्यमित्र का भाई सुज्येष्ठ और
फिर अग्निमित्र का पुत्र वसुमित्र गद्दी पर बैठा । फिर धीरे धीरे
इस वंश का प्रताप घटता गया और वसुदेव ने विश्वासघात
करके कण्व नामक ब्राह्मण राजवंश की प्रतिष्ठा की ।
