लाल रंग की एक धातु जो खानों में
गंधक, लोहे तथा और द्रव्यों के साथ मिली हुई मिलती है ।
विशेष—यह पीटने से बढ़ सकती है और इसका तार भी खींचा
जा सकता है । ताप और विद्युत के प्रवाह का संचार ताँबे पर
बहुत अधिक होता है, इससे उसके तारों का व्यवहार टेलिग्राफ
आदि में होता है । ताँबे में और दूसरी धातुऔं को निर्दिष्ट
मात्रा में मिलाने से कई प्रकार की मिश्रीत धातुएँ बनती हैं,
जैसे, राँगा मिलाने से काँसा, जस्ता मिलाने से पीतल । कई
प्रकार के विलायती सोने भी ताँवे से बनते हैं । खूब ठंढी
जगह में ताँबा और जस्ता बराबर बराबर लेकर गला डाले ।
फिर गली हुई धातु को खूद घोटे और तोड़ा सा जस्ता और
मिला दे । धोंटते धोंटते कुछ देर में सोने की तरह पीला हो
जायगा । ताँबे की खानें संसार में बहुत स्थानों में हैं जिनमें
भिन्न भिन्न यौगिक द्रव्यों के अनुसार भिन्न भिन्न प्रकार
का ताँबा निकलता है । कहीं धूमले रंग का, कहीं बैंगनी रंग
का, कहीं पीले रंग का । भारतवर्ष में सिंहभूमि, हजारीबाग,
जयपुर, अजमेर, कच्छ, नागपुर, नेल्लोर इत्यादि अनेक
स्थानों में ताँबा निकलता है । जापान से बहुत अच्छे ताँबे के
पत्तर बाहर जाते हैं ।
हिंदुओं के यहाँ ताँबा बहुत पवित्र धातु माना जाता है, अतः
उसके अरघे, पंचपात्र, कलश, झारी आदि पूजा के बरतन
बहुत बनते हैं । डाक्टरी, हकीम और वैद्यक तीनों मत की
चिकित्साओं में ताँबे का व्यवहार अनेक रूपों में होता है ।
आयुर्वेद में ताँबा शोधने की विधि इस प्रकार है । ताँबे का
बहुत पतला पत्तर करके आग में तपाकर लाल कर डाले ।
फिर उसे क्रमशः तेल, मट्ठे, काँजी, गोमूत्र और कुलथी की
पीठी में तीन बार बुझावे । बिना शोधा हुआ ताँबा विष
से अधिक हानिकारक होता है ।
