१. वह चिकना तरल पदार्थ जो बीजों
वनस्पतियों आदि से किसी विशेष क्रिया द्बारा निकाला जाता
है अथवा आपसे आप निकलता है । यह सदा पानी से हलका
होता है, उसमें घुल नहीं सकता, अलकोहल में घुल जाता है ।
अधिक सरदी पाकर प्रायः जम जाता है और अग्नि के संयोग
से धूआँ देकर जल जाता है । इसमें कुछ न गंध भी होती है । चिकना । रोगन ।
विशेष—तेल तीन प्रकार का होता है—मसृण, उड़ जानेवाला
और खनिज । मसृण तेल वनस्पति और जंतु दोनों से निकलता है । वानस्पत्य मसृण वह है जो बाजों या दानों आदि को
कोल्हू में पेरकर या दबाकर निकाला जाता है, जैसे, तिल,
सरसों, नीम, गरी, रेंड़ी, कुसुम आदि का तेल । इस प्रकार
का तेल दीआ जलाने, साबुन और वार्निश बनाने, सुगंधित
करके सिर या शरीर में लगाने, खाने की चीजें तलने, फलों
आदि का आचार डालने और इसी प्रकार के और दूसरे कामों
में आता है । मशीनों के पुरजों में उन्हे घिसने से बचाने के
लिये भी यह डाला जाता है । सिर में लगाने के चमेली, बेले
आदि के जो सुगंधित तेल होते हैं वे बहुधा तिल के तेल की
जमीन देकर ही बनाए जाते हैं । भिन्न भिन्न तेलों के गुण
आदि भी एक दूसरे से भिन्न होते हैं । इसके अतिरिक्त अनेक
प्रकार के वृक्षों से भी आपसे आप तेल निकलता है । जो पीछे
से साफ कर लिया जाता है, जैसे—ताड़पीन आदिं । जंतुज
तेल जानवरों की चरबी का तरल अंश है और इसका व्यवहार
प्रायः औषध के रूप में ही होता है । जैसे, साँप का तेल, धनेस
का तेल, मगर का तेल आदि । उड़ जानेवाला तेल वह है
जो वनस्पति के भिन्न भिन्न अंशों से भभके द्बारा उतारा
जाता है । जैसे, अजवायन का तेल, ताड़पीन का तेल, मोम
का तेल, हींग का तेल आदि । ऐसे तैल हवा लगने से सूख या
उड़ जाते हैं और इन्हैं खैलाने के लिये बहुत अधिक गरमी की आवश्यकता होती है । इस प्रकार के तेल के शरीर में
लगने से कभी कभी कुछ जलन भी होती है । ऐसे तेलों का
व्यवहार विलायती औषधों और सुगंधों आदि में बहुत आधि—
कता से होता है । कभी कभी वारनिश या रंग आदि बनाने
में भी यह काम आता है । खनिज तेल वह है जो केवल खानों
या जमीन में खोदे हुए बड़े बड़े गड़्ढों में से ही निकलता है ।
जैसे, मिट्टी का तेल (देखो 'मिट्टी का तेल' और 'पेट्रोलियम')
आदि । आजकल सारे सँसार में बहुधा रोशनी करने और
मोटर (इंजिन) चलाने में इसी का व्यवहार होता है ।
आयुर्वेद में सब प्रकार के तेलों को वायुनाशक माना है । वैद्यक के अनुसार शरीर में तेल मलने से कफ और वायु का नाश
होता है, धातु पुष्ट होती है, तेज बढ़ता है, चमड़ा मुलायम
रहता है, रंग खिलता है और चित्त प्रसन्न रहता है । पैर के
तलवों में तेल मलने से अच्छी तरह नींद आती है और मस्तिष्क
