१. पुराणानुसार भाले के फल के समान एक
शस्त्र जो इंद्र का प्रधान शस्त्र कहा गया है ।
विशेष—इसकी उत्पत्ति की कथा ब्राह्मण ग्रंथों और पुराणों में
लिखी हुई है । ऋग्वेद में उल्लेख है कि दधीचि ऋषि की हड्डी
से इंद्र ने राक्षसों का ध्वस किया । ऐतरेय ब्राह्मण में इसका
इस प्रकार विवरण है । दधीचि जब तक जीते थे, तब तक
असुर उन्हें देखकर भाग जाते थे पर जब वे मर गए, तब असुरों
ने उत्पात मचाना आरंभ किया । इंद्र दधीचि ऋषि की खोज
में पुष्कर गए । वहाँ पता चला कि दधीचि का देहावसान हो
गया । इसपर इंद्र उनकी हड्डी ढूँढने लगे । पुष्कर क्षेत्र में
सिर की हड्डी मिली । उसी का वज्र बनाकर इंद्र ने असुरों का
संहार किया । भागवत में लिखा है कि इंद्र ने वृत्रासुर का वध
करने के लिये दधीचि की हड्डी से वज्र बनवाया था । मत्स्य-
पुराण के अनुसार जब विश्वरकर्मा ने सूर्य को भ्रमयंत्र (खराद)
पर चढ़ाकर खरादा था, तब छिलकर जो तेज निकला था, उसी
से विष्णु का चक्र, रुद्र का शूल और इंद्र का वज्र बना था ।
वामनपुराण में लिखा है कि इंद्र जब दिति के गर्भ में घुस गए
थे, तब वहाँ उन्हें बालक के पास ही एक मांसपिंड मिला था ।
इंद्र ने जब उसे हाथ में लेकर दबाया, तब वह लंबा हो गया
और उसमें सौ गाँठें दिखाई पड़ीं । वही पीछे कठिन होकर
वज्र बन गया । इसी प्रकार और और पुराणों में भी भिन्न
भिन्न कथाएँ हैं ।

क्रि० प्र०—गिरना ।—पड़ना ।
मुहा०—वज्र पड़े=दैव से भारी दंड मिले । सत्यनाश हो ।

३. हीरा—उ०—मुझे बड़ी दयापूर्वक एक अमोल वज्र की अँगूठी
केवल स्मरणार्थ दे गए थे ।—श्यामा०, पृ० १२७ । ४. एक

विशेष—वैद्यक के ग्रंथों में वज्रलौह के अनेक भेद कहे गए हैं ।
यथा—नीलपिंड, अरुणाभ, मोरक, नागकेसर, तित्तिरांग,
स्वर्णवज्र, शैवालवज्र, शेणवज्र, रोहिणी, कांकोल, ग्रंथिवज्रक,
और मदन ।

भीर । अति अघात, कछु नाहिंन सूझत, वज्र, चलहिं ज्यों नीर ।
