Ypsilon is the twentieth letter of the Greek alphabet. It is one of the seven vowels; is ancipit, that is, its amount can be short or long. The name ὗ ψιλόν, that is, "simple y", derives from the Byzantine period: since at that time this letter had already the modern pronunciation / i /, to distinguish it from the pronounced sentences too, it was necessary to indicate that it was a " simple ", ie not composed of other letters. In the classical era it was known as ὗ / hy: /. The name can be accented according to the original Greek hypsilòn, or Latin hypsilon. The current pronunciation hýpsilon has no foundation; however, in Greek modern the emphasis is on the first vocal: ύψιλον. The classical pronunciation corresponds to the u French or ü, / y /, while in the archaic language it sounded / u /. With this sound, and without the lower vertical tract, it passed to the Latin alphabet as V / U; but in modern Greek it pronounces / i /.

Ypsilon è la ventesima lettera dell'alfabeto greco. È una delle sette vocali; è ancipite, cioè la sua quantità può essere breve o lunga. Il nome ὗ ψιλόν, cioè "y semplice", deriva dal periodo bizantino: poiché in quel periodo questa lettera aveva già la pronuncia moderna /i/, per distinguerla dai dittonghi pronunciati anch'essi /i/ si rese necessario indicare che era una "i semplice", cioè non composta da altre lettere. In epoca classica era conosciuta come ὗ /hy:/. Il nome può essere accentato secondo l'originale greco hypsilòn, oppure alla latina hypsìlon. La pronuncia corrente hýpsilon non ha fondamento; tuttavia, in greco moderno l'accento si trova proprio sulla prima vocale: ύψιλον. La pronuncia classica corrisponde alla u francese o ü, /y/, mentre nella lingua arcaica aveva suono /u/. Con questo suono, e senza il tratto verticale inferiore, è passata all'alfabeto latino come V/U; ma nel greco moderno si pronuncia /i/.
