Athlone Castle "Athlone Castle" A castle in Athlone, a town that crosses the middle of Ireland, Roscommon and Westmeath. It faces Shannon River. Normans in the 13th century built on the same place which was an important strategically important area for a long time. It has a high rampart wall and many gun gates and is known as one of the most solid castles in the country. James II who was defeated by the Allied Dutch coalition in the battle of the Boyne River came to fight in 1691 with this allied Irish French Allied Army in 1691, but was forced to withdraw after a fierce battle. アスローン‐じょう【アスローン城】 《Athlone Castle》アイルランド中部、ロスコモン州とウエストミース州にまたがる町、アスローンにある城。シャノン川に面する。古くから戦略上重要な地域だった同地に、13世紀にノルマン人が建造。高い城壁と多くの砲門をもち、同国で最も堅固な城の一つとして知られる。ボイン川の戦いでイングランド‐オランダ連合軍に敗れたジェームズ2世が、1691年にこの城でアイルランド‐フランス連合軍とともに再起を賭けて戦いに臨んだが、激戦の末、撤退を余儀なくされた。
