Barbital or barbitone was a sleeping pill used from 1903 to the middle of the 1930's, and it is the first barbituric acid drug. Product name Veronal. The name as compound is diethyl malonyl urea, or diethyl barbituric acid. It is synthesized by condensing the diethyl ester of malonic acid and urea in the presence of sodium ethoxide or adding iodoethane to the silver salt of malonyl urea. It is a crystalline white solid with an odorless and slight bitterness. It was first synthesized in 1902 by German chemists Emile Fisher and Josef von Mailing. Their discovery was announced in 1903, and in 1904 Bayer released it under the name "Veronal".
