The name comes from the British science fiction writer A = C = Clark's novel "2001 Space Trip" (Title 2001: A Space Odyssey). にせんいち‐マーズオデッセイ【二〇〇一マーズオデッセイ】 《2001 Mars Odyssey》米国の火星探査機。γ線分光計による火星表面近くの水(氷)の探査を目的とする。2001年に打ち上げられ、同年に周回軌道への投入に成功。極域のドライアイスの下に大量の氷が存在することを示すデータが得られた。名称は英国のSF作家A=C=クラークの小説「2001年宇宙の旅」(原題2001: A Space Odyssey)に由来する。
