The College Scholastic Ability Test is a test introduced in the evaluation of university entrance examination in Korea since 1994. The term college scholastic ability test means "a test that evaluates the ability to study at a university." In the early days, it was abbreviated as 'large waterpower', 'big water power', etc. It took place on the third Wednesday of November every year from the 1995 school year to the 2006 school year, but it is on the second Thursday of November from the 2007 school year. The 2016 academic year will take place on Thursday, November 12, 2015. However, the effective date will be postponed to the third Thursday of November because of the difficulty of teaching after the high school 3 years of college entrance examination. The SAT will be conducted for those who are expected to graduate from high school who want to go to college, those who have already graduated, or those who have passed the SAT and who have equivalent educational background.

대학수학능력시험은 1994학년도부터 대한민국의 대학 입학 평가에 도입된 시험이다. 대학수학능력시험이라는 용어는 '대학에서 수학할 수 있는 능력을 평가하는 시험'을 의미한다. 초기에는 줄여서 '대수력', '대수능' 등으로 불렸으며 요즘에는 보통 수능이라고 불린다. 1995학년도부터 2006학년도까지는 매년 11월 셋째 주 수요일에 시행되었으나, 2007학년도 수능부터는 11월 두 번째 목요일에 시행되고 있다. 2016학년도 수능은 2015년 11월 12일 목요일에 시행될 예정이다. 다만, 2017학년도 수능부터는 고3의 수능 후 생활 지도의 어려움을 이유로 11월 셋째 주 목요일로 시행일이 연기된다. 수능은 대학 진학을 원하는 고등학교 졸업 예정자 및 이미 졸업한 자, 또는 검정고시 합격자를 비롯한 그에 상응하는 학력을 소지한 자 등을 대상으로 시행한다.
